Local knowledge
Hebden Bridge houses & what they need
Almost every house in Hebden Bridge is solid gritstone. There is no cavity, so damp from a wet hillside or a failed gutter shows on the inside face of the wall, and the plaster takes it first.
Under the modern skim there is often old lime plaster. Put gypsum straight over it, or onto damp stone, and it lets go within a few years. We sound every wall before quoting and tell you which parts are sound, which need hacking off, and which want lime rather than gypsum.
The mill conversions on the valley floor are a different job: long wall runs, high ceilings, and boarding over brick or stone that was never meant to be a living room wall.
Hebden Bridge and the upper Calder Valley are our local area. Site visits are easy to arrange, and we're used to hillside terraces with no off-street parking, narrow ginnels, and access routes that look impossible on a map.

How we quote
Fixed price, not a rough rate
Plastering is priced after a site visit. Access, the condition of what's underneath, ceiling heights, and whether we're working around fitted furniture all feed into the quote. You get a fixed written quote rather than a rough day rate.
FAQs
Plastering in Hebden Bridge: common questions
Should my stone cottage be plastered in lime?
Often the outside walls, not necessarily every wall. Solid stone needs to dry out through the plaster, and gypsum on a damp stone wall traps the moisture and fails. Stud walls and ceilings are fine in gypsum. We go through it room by room on the site visit. The plaster sounds hollow when I knock it. Does it all need to come off?
Only the hollow parts. We tap the walls, mark what has come away from the stone, and cut back to sound plaster. If most of a wall has gone, re-plastering it whole works out cheaper than patching.Do you work in listed buildings and the conservation area?
Yes. Internal plastering in an unlisted house in the Hebden Bridge Conservation Area needs no consent. In a listed building, removing original plaster can need listed building consent, so check with Calderdale Council before anything comes off.Do you cover Heptonstall, Old Town and Mytholmroyd?
Yes. The whole upper valley is the same working day for us: Heptonstall, Old Town, Colden, Blackshaw Head, Mytholmroyd and Cragg Vale.
