The detail

How interior painting jobs actually run

Prep is most of the job

The finish you see at the end comes from the time spent before the first coat. Walls made good, edges tidied, surfaces sanded, and any previous damage blocked out before paint goes on.

Skipping prep is the classic cheap redecoration trap: filler rings showing through emulsion, hairline cracks reopening, patchy sheen across the wall. We'd rather spend the time up front than rush to a finish that won't hold.

Older houses, newer houses

A lot of the homes we paint around Hebden Bridge, Halifax, and the Calder Valley are period properties. Walls are rarely square, plaster histories are patchwork, and the way the building breathes changes through the seasons.

On older homes we pick a paint system that suits the fabric. On newer work, standard trade finishes do the job. The principle is always the same: right paint for the wall, not the other way round.

Woodwork

Skirting, architrave, doors, window boards, staircases, and banisters. Failed paint comes back, splits and damage get made good, and the whole piece gets a full prep before any topcoat goes near it.

For doors, we can spray for a cleaner finish or brush and roll in situ, depending on the scope. We'll recommend what suits the job on the site visit.

Kitchen and cabinetry spraying

Rather than rip out a sound kitchen, a respray transforms it for a fraction of the cost of a replacement. Doors and drawer fronts come off for spraying, carcasses are sprayed in situ with everything around them masked up.

The result is a factory-smooth finish in the colour you actually want, with the existing layout and hardware kept in place.

Wallpaper, hung properly

Stripping old paper cleanly, hanging standard and feature papers, and matching patterns around corners, switches, and fireplaces. We walk the room before calling it finished so any seams or edges get another look.

Colour advice if you want it

Stuck between five greens? We'll bring options out, brush samples on the actual wall, and come back to look at them in different light before you commit to a big tin. No pressure, just a second opinion from someone who has seen a lot of colour schemes land well and badly.

FAQs

Interior Painting: common questions

The ones we get asked most often on interior painting jobs.

  • How long does a single room take?

It depends on the room, the amount of prep involved, and the number of colours you're after. We'll give you a realistic timeline alongside the quote once we've seen the job.
  • Do we need to move out while you paint?

Almost never. We work room by room, cover floors and furniture, contain dust, and hoover down at the end of each day. For whole-house redecorations people normally carry on using the rest of the house as a home.
  • Can you paint over wallpaper?

Sometimes, if the paper is sound and well stuck. More often it's cleaner in the long run to strip it, make good any damaged plaster, and paint direct. We'll tell you which applies when we come round.
  • Do you supply the paint, or do we?

Either works. If we supply, we buy at trade prices and pass that on. If you've already bought paint, or you want a specific heritage brand, we'll just work with that. The quote makes it clear either way.
  • Do you spray or brush and roll woodwork?

Both, depending on the job. We'll recommend what suits the space and the finish you're after on the site visit.
