Local knowledge

Hebden Bridge houses & what they need

Most of Hebden Bridge is bare gritstone, and most of it should stay that way. Render here is usually on gable ends and rear walls that take the weather, on later extensions in block or brick, and on houses where an earlier owner rendered over the stone.

Cement render on a solid stone wall is a common cause of damp inside. Rain gets in through hairline cracks and cannot get back out through the cement. Where that is happening, the render wants to come off and the stone repointing, then either left bare or re-rendered in lime.

Much of the town is in the Hebden Bridge Conservation Area. Rendering a wall that was not rendered before needs planning permission there. Repairing existing render to match normally does not. If the house is listed, talk to Calderdale Council before any render work.

Hebden Bridge and the upper Calder Valley are our local area. Site visits are easy to arrange, and we're used to hillside terraces with no off-street parking, narrow ginnels, and access routes that look impossible on a map.

How we quote

Fixed price, not a rough rate

Rendering is priced after a site visit. The area of wall, height and scaffold, how much old render has to come off, and the state of the wall underneath all feed into the quote. You get a fixed written quote with scaffold and prep itemised.

FAQs

Rendering in Hebden Bridge: common questions

  • My render is cracked. Does the whole wall need doing?

Not always. We tap-test the whole wall and mark where the render has come away. Local hollow patches are cut out and re-rendered, then the wall is painted so the repair does not show. If most of it is hollow, re-rendering the wall whole is the better spend.
  • Can you render a stone house?

We can, but we will tell you if we think it is a mistake. On solid stone, cement render often makes damp worse. Lime is the breathable option, and in the conservation area you need planning permission first.
  • What time of year can you render?

Render needs dry weather above freezing while it cures, so most of it runs from spring to autumn. We book exterior work ahead and move it rather than render into frost or driving rain.
  • Do you paint the render as well?

Yes. New render is left to cure, then painted with a masonry paint that suits it. One team for the render and the paint.
