Plastering & Skimming in Halifax & West Yorkshire

Flat plaster is the difference between a room that looks decorated and a room that just looks painted. We take care to get it right: walls built back to level, then a clean finish that's ready for paint.

The detail

How plastering jobs actually run

What we plaster

Whole rooms, single feature walls, ceilings, patch repairs, cover-ups over older finishes, reveals after new windows and doors, and fresh stud walls from framing through to finish.

Different backgrounds want different approaches. We'll talk through the options on the site visit and recommend what suits the wall.

Stud walls, false walls, and media walls

New stud walls built, boarded, and finished flat. Insulation and acoustic options go in between the studs where they're needed.

For media walls we can box out recesses for TVs, frame alcoves for amps and consoles, and finish flush with the surrounding wall so the whole thing reads as part of the architecture rather than a bolt-on.

Sound, heat, and damp

Acoustic options for party walls, particularly useful in terraces where neighbours share a bedroom wall. Insulated options on cold external walls, common in older stone properties.

Waterproof preparation for wet rooms, cellar conversions, and anywhere keeping water out matters more than looking pretty.

Old walls, solid stone, and lime

Plenty of local housing stock predates modern plaster systems. Where the building fabric calls for a traditional approach, we'll say so, and suggest what suits the wall. No dogma, just what works on the building in front of us.

Patch repairs without a ghost line

The telltale outline after a radiator comes off, a ceiling damaged by a leak, a corner knocked during a move, or a chase cut for new wiring. We feather the patch so it doesn't ghost through once it's painted.

If the surrounding wall is tired enough that a patch will always show, we'll say so, and price a full wall skim as an option.

Drying and painting over new plaster

Fresh plaster needs to dry before it takes paint. How long depends on the time of year and how well the room can air. We'll give you a realistic date so the decorating schedule lines up with reality.

How we quote

Fixed price, not a rough rate

Plastering is priced after a site visit. Access, the condition of what's underneath, ceiling heights, and whether we're working around fitted furniture all feed into the quote. You get a fixed written quote rather than a rough day rate.

Areas we cover

Plasteringacross the Calder Valley & West Yorkshire

We plaster across the Calder Valley and Halifax: Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Todmorden, Sowerby Bridge, Ripponden, Brighouse, Elland. Further afield into Huddersfield, Bradford, Keighley, and Leeds. A lot of the houses we work in were built before the 1930s, so we're used to walls that aren't straight and plaster histories that aren't documented.

FAQs

Plastering: common questions

The ones we get asked most often on plastering jobs.

  • Do I need a full re-plaster or just a skim?

A skim works when the existing plaster is still sound. A full re-plaster is needed when the old plaster is past saving. We'll sound the walls on the site visit and tell you honestly which applies, room by room.
  • How long before I can paint?

Fresh plaster needs time to dry before paint goes on. How long depends on the season and airflow in the room. We'll give you a realistic date when we book the work in.
  • Can you plaster over artex?

Often yes, depending on the condition of the existing surface. We'll take a look on the site visit and recommend the approach that suits it.
  • Do you do lime plaster?

Yes, on buildings where it's the right call. Older properties sometimes benefit from a traditional finish. We'll recommend what suits the fabric of your home.
  • How much mess does plastering make?

The work itself is reasonably clean. The mess is mostly on the way in, breaking out old plaster and protecting floors. We cover everything and keep the site tidy.
